the-solo-project was founded in 2008 by Paul Kusseneers, director of Kusseneers gallery in Brussels, with the ambition of offering a sophisticated and engaging new model of art fair.
Each presentation at the fair is a solo exhibition, in order to give the opportunity to fully engage with artists and their works; like in a museum setting, collectors, curators and art lovers are offered an in-depth understanding of an artist’s practice.
Participation is strictly by invitation only: galleries are carefully selected, looking at offering the best international laboratories for the production of contemporary art. The curatorial cooperation with the participating gallery owners is an integral element of the concept and reflects the desire to show to the public a different and ever surprising spectrum of contemporary artists every year.
For its ninth edition, the-solo-project introduces POWER! a thematic section dedicated to international contemporary art galleries who have demonstrated a commitment to support promising and emerging artists, through keen eye, savvy artistic direction and relevant programming.
The-solo-project’s new section is a curated open-floor format show, encouraging to discover positions of contemporary art from across the globe. It aims to de-construct the conventional notions of art fair presentations by displaying works under one theme; this year each artist is offered a space to confront and react to the idea of Power, analysing it from several perspectives and across different artistic genres.
POWER! is proud to showcase, with artist like, Fabrizio Corneli’s installations, “shadows of the power of a dream that once was reality and that perhaps shall never repeat itself” side by side with photographs from Maïmouna Guerresi, Italian artist who, after having travelled to various African countries, converted to Islam, taking on her new name.
German artist Hans Petri’s thought provoking installations will be shown together with Robert Gligorov’s photographs, polished images which contain explicit violence that shakes up the norms of representation. Asia is also strongly represented, for instance by the Chinese artist Li Xiangyang, who presents us with painting where he flies above contemporary cities and old memories, evoking his origins and artistic roots.
